Academia is all about focus and absolute mastery of a particular aspect of a specific branch of science. Most academic events are no way as esoteric, but they have to remain narrow in order to maintain a balance between high level discussion and a broad reach to allow networking. In reality, most people don’t enjoy going to the broader events, which never allow you to attend every talk since there’s just not enough time
